The background for the work with EDD at NSH

NSH has based its work on the work of the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (FFI) and Statens Veivesen (SVV) in studies from 2015-2018, combined with Fjellanger's core competence on sensitivity and odor discrimination from its own research studies and 40 years of experience with search dogs. Fjellanger has a great focus on systematics and methodology in all his work with dogs. This has been demonstrated, among other things, through research projects using detection dogs for mines, cancer and corrosion as well as work to develop and implement the international industry standard for mine detection dogs (IMAS) for the United Nations (UN). IMAS is based on ISO HSEQ.

Explosive detection dogs - competence and education

Search for explosives, explosive detection dog / explosive dog

The dogs have solid explosive competence:

  • Trained to detect EGDN and NG in addition to all the most common variants of civil explosives used today as well as older (back to the 50s and 60s).

  • Continuously trained to expand their skills through the use of new types of explosives / unexploded ordnance.

The dogs are trained in different types of search styles:

  • Area declaration - scan planned areas where explosives may be hidden. Search with shortline or longline.

  • Ditch / cutting - along ditches and rock cuts in connection with rehabilitation, follow-up or other suspected undetonated explosives.

  • Rock / Blast pile - dogs must investigate an area where undetonated explosives may be hidden in rock masses after detonation.

  • Other areas of use - spot search (small area with a high probability of explosives) and search from lifts, etc.
