Do you want to work as a dog handler?

Make your dream come true - there are many paths to the finish line

There is not necessarily one single answer to becoming a dog handler in this industry.
There are several options for working with dogs and getting a position as a dog handler. Many people start by getting a job related to animals and dogs, and then build up knowledge and experience that allows other opportunities to open up. The best way to do this is to gain good, up-to-date knowledge of animal training and, above all, experience. Experience can include training your own dog and attending courses to expand your skills.

Skills and education

Acquiring skills in dog training usually involves attending courses (behavior and dog sports e.g. working dog and search related) and taking dog trainer/instructor training. This is a good way to gain experience in dog training.

As far as official education is concerned, there is education through the Armed Forces or a certificate in animal science (relatively new scheme in the Norwegian school system - it also applies to people who have finished high school).

Vocational certificate in animal science

Similar to building and construction in upper secondary school, you now have animal science. When you take animal science, you will become an animal technician and be able to work in various animal-related companies. Animal science is also possible to take as a private student - or as a trainee - if you have professional experience, you only need a theory exam and a vocational test before you have a vocational certificate!

It is also possible to do an apprenticeship with a search dog training company. As an apprentice, you will gain work experience while gaining enough professional experience to sit the professional exam.

There are also other schemes for obtaining a vocational certificate. As there are different offers at the county councils, we recommend that you contact your county council.
